Sites of Interest

Heritage The area holds a wealth of history, heritage and myth.

Close by is the National Trust property, Arlington Court, of Regency design, housing a magnificent collection of horse-drawn carriages and vehicles with carriage drives available, and extensive grounds, home to red deer and Jacobs Sheep.

Other National Trust properties, such as Watersmeet and Knighthayes Court, are all within easy reach.

The ancient Pannier Market in Barnstaple is well worth a visit on Fridays when the market is in full swing.

Visit Torrington, the site of the last major battle of the English Civil War, and become immersed in life as it was in North Devon in 1664.

Gardens

RHS Rosemoor, near Torrington is a good day visit and frequently holds special days. Apple Day in October should not be missed.

Marwood Hill Gardens, set in the hills above Barnstaple, are very close by.

Broomhill Sculpture Gardens. Here is a garden with a difference, full of eye-catching sculptures and figures, set in a lovely valley.

Areas of Interest,

The headland of Baggy Point (NT) is just round the corner, offering fine views across to Lundy Island.

Hartland Point (NT) is across the river but is worth the visit for the dramatic cliff scenery. Hartland Abbey and Quay are also well worth seeing.

Clovelly, a tiny village set on the side of the cliffs and from which vehicles are banned. Walk down the cobbled streets to the harbour and see the donkeys that used to ferry people and goods through the village.

Lundy Island. If time permits a day trip to Lundy is a must. Sail on the MS Oldenburg from either Ilfracombe or Bideford to spend time exploring this beautiful island in the Bristol Channel. This is our favorite place on which we stay every year.

Culture, Concerts and Clotted Cream

The Queens Theatre, Barnstaple and the Landmark, Ilfracombe are the centres of activity for the annual North Devon Festival, held in June, and offer a wide range of excellent productions and entertainment throughout the year.

The Plough Arts Centre, Torrington / offers plays, films and art and a place to eat before the show.

Cinemas are close by in Barnstaple and Ilfracombe.

No visit to Devon would be complete without sampling a Devon Cream Tea with clotted cream; does the jam or the cream go onto the scone first?
